Yesterday our class went to a CLIP College Hour in s1 112. We listened to three presentations. The main topic was Diversity. Diversity is a variety of things such as color, opinion, life style, society etc. I also learned why inclusiveness and respecting diversity are important. It’s important because the recognition of value and contribution helps us to build trust, develop our interpersonal skills, and also equips us with new ways of solving problems. In the second presentation we learned about sexual harassment. Sexual harassment is a behavior, and there are different types of Sexual Harassment. One is quid Pro Quo. This is when students feel pressured by sexual activity in return for favorable education. Another one is Hostile Academic environment such as verbal, nonverbal and physical. Anyone can be victim or ether way anyone can be guilty of sexual harassment. This can occur anywhere. If we know that someone is a victim we have to report this problem as soon as possible. Another serious problem we learned in the presentation was Domestic violence. Domestic violence can occur to any member of the family. In the video we watched the story about a family in which the father was hitting his wife, but she didn’t say anything because she was undocumented so she was scared. Her sister in law took her to the police station to ask how a person who is being victim of sexual abuse can get help. At the end her family got help on time. Domestic violence can include parents to children, women to another woman, a man hitting another man, a husband hitting his wife or a wife hitting her husband. We have to get help as soon as possible and not let this problem continue. It doesn’t matter if you are undocumented; you can still get help. We can call 911 or 311 to get help. The last topic in the presentation was plagiarism. Plagiarism means coping ideas from another person without giving them the credit. In other words, it is when we steal another person’s words and we don’t mention the sources. When we copy words we have to use “quotations” this way we can avoid plagiarism. Another way to avoid plagiarism is when we use “citation.” Citation is when you tell the readers that your work came from another source. Plagiarism is illegal.
“College Hour Knowledge” Lats week Clip students went to college hour. We learned about three different topics. These topics are Single Stop, Career Path, and ASAP. These programs provide a lot of benefits for community college students. Some students can apply to qualify to get help from the government and some benefits are free transportation, free books, free tutoring, free legal assistant, and free classes. If your goal is to continue college, you can get help using Single Stop. Single Stop is a program with free services for community colleges students. Its services are quick benefits screening, financial counseling, legal assistance and tax preparation. Single Stop can help you to beat obstacles in your life. The Single Stop office is located in the Library Building, room 432-A. For more information contact Tony Luna at 718-631-6347, or go to [email protected]. It is a good program for students who have this kind of situation. Career Path is a program to help students finding jobs more easily. This program benefits, documented and undocumented students. Fortunately this program is free and includes books. Career Path offers programs in manufacturing, green jobs, culinary and medical. People who are interested can go to the office of Science Building, or call 718-281-5157, and also find information at Cunycareerpath.edu. The government is trying to help us by providing a lot of opportunities, and we think that it is important to get help in different ways. If you want to study and finish your major as soon as possible and you qualify, you must apply to ASAP. This program offers assistance with career counseling and job placement. However, ASAP doesn’t provide financial aid. In fact this program also gives free Metro cards, and tuition waiver. ASAP is not for everyone. Students must have documents to qualify. Furthermore, not all majors are eligible. Some examples are nursing and early childhood education. To apply for this program it is necessary to attend an ASAP Information Session or visit the website at www.qcc.cuny.edu/asap or contact 718 631- 6680. This program helps many people that are not financially stable. Community college provides a lot of benefits in which students grow successfully in academic advisement. Single Stop, Career Path, and ASAP help in different ways. We must have the necessary requirements to qualify in any of these programs. Something very important that we learned in the College Hour is how we can get help to move forward in our life. In our opinion, we have to look for help if it is necessary.
